The breakup of arguably the greatest QB and coach duo ever, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, occurred over a week ago, which caused mayhem in New England. Tom Brady is now on the Buccaneers, a team that went from 3rd in the division to suddenly Super Bowl contenders. It left many fans in awe, but what could be more surprising is the Patriots current QB situation.
The Patriots current QB room consists of Jarrett Stidham, Brian Hoyer, and Cody Kessler. In fact, the Patriots were in talks with the Carolina Panthers to trade for 24-year old Kyle Allen. Now the Patriots have NFL fans asking themselves, how many backup QBs could you need?
Kyle Allen did start off his regular season campaign as a nice 4-0, but took a step backwards later in the season, finishing 5-7 before Will Grier took over. With quarterbacks like Cam Newton, Andy Dalton, and Jameis Winston being available to sign or trade for, the Patriots continue to look for merely average quarterbacks.
If the Patriots decide to stick with Jarrett Stidham, it would not be the worst option. In the 2019 preseason, he completed 67.8% of his passes, threw 4 touchdowns, and had a 102.6 QBR.
However, it could be possible the Patriots our looking into a QB in this years draft. If the Patriots decide to roll with a quarterback this year, you can expect it to happen on day 2 or 3. Some options for the Patriots in rounds 2 and 3 could be Jalen Hurts, Jake Fromm, or Jacob Eason. You can bet that Belichick can make any of these young studs Pro-Bowl quarterbacks. With the Patriots star-studded defense, including Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore, and offensive stars like Julian Edelman and James White, a young QB that has potential is the best option for the Patriots.
If the Patriots do decide to roll with a QB in this years draft, the Patriots would avoid a full rebuild, and could have some QB competition this offseason with Jarrett Stidham. Bill Belichick and his squad will be a force to be reckoned with, even after losing the greatest QB of all time, Tom Brady. With the new 7-team playoffs in place, don’t count out the Patriots this year, especially with a QB from this year’s loaded draft class.
