“The protest was there to help people express themselves, but there was no endgame, no plan,” Lynn said. “All of the sacrifice and protest, I wanted to know at the end of this, if something was going to be done. I don’t want to be doing this again 20 years from now, and so I’m looking for ways to sit at the table and have a conversation about this broken system.”
The head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers, Anthony Lynn, is patently upset over the death of George Floyd.
Lynn is one of four non-white coaches in the NFL.
“I haven’t done anything to make this a better place for my son,” Lynn said. “I remember having the talk with him when he was 16 about how to handle police, and then at age 30, I called him up and just had the talk with him again because I’m so scared. I want to do something, but to be honest with you, I don’t know what that is.”
Lynn’s first attempt to make a difference was participating in a protest in Huntington Beach. He felt it was meaningful until he came to realize that there was no long-term strategy
Anthony Lynn is one of the first head coach/general manager in the NFL to speak out on George Floyd. NFL players have expressed their emotions, and want coaches to speak out as well.
One of the greatest receivers in NFL history, Terrell Owens, conveyed how frustrated he is because NFL owners have not spoken out.
The 2019 1st overall pick, Heisman winner, and College Football Champion also shared his thoughts on Twitter.
Anthony Lynn also brought up Colin Kaepernick. In an interview with Los Angeles times, Lynn said he has “a lot of respect” for Kaepernick’s protest against police brutality and racial injustice.
“I didn’t like it. I know when you look at 32 quarterbacks in the National Football League, Colin could have been one of the 32. If not, he could have been a quality backup. For me being an African American head coach, this is tough.”
Lynn plans to use his virtual offseason workouts to discuss the protests and calls for social justice reform with his players.
One of the players that protested alongside Colin Kaepernick was safety Eric Reid. The difference? Reid was signed to a contract with the Carolina Panthers in 2018 (he is now a free agent). Kaepernick has not been on a team since 2017.
According to the New York Post, an Ex-NFL executive, Joe Lockhart, believes the Minnesota Vikings should do the ‘right thing’ and sign QB Colin Kaepernick. He believes that there is no better team than the Vikings, who play in a city where violent protests have broken out, to sign Colin.
